My journey into understanding online manipulation began in 2014, during my time working in counter-terrorism, where collectively we were focused on combating online radicalisation. It became clear to me how our own personal beliefs and narratives can be shaped and manipulated based upon the foundation of our wellbeing, environment, and the context in which we operate. Not to mention the impact social media was having on this process. This also led to me reflecting on my own personal history as a carer for my mother with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) who passed in 2015. Throughout my childhood I was an especially early adopter of technology, and as both a hobby and a vehicle of escapism, it can very often help you create a story you ‘want’ to see.

As I transitioned into a role in Cyber Security and Fraud, I began connecting these themes to our susceptibility to social engineering. This sparked my ongoing personal and professional fascination with how humans perceive risk, what makes us vulnerable to manipulation, and how our relationship with technology compounds emotions and is integral to our well-being.
